Major geek banter at Chez Vulgarweed, 'cause both the Kitty-Boy and I left The Two Towers going, "what the hell was that?" In all fairness, a good part of that may be the whiplash effect of the projector that died in the last five minutes, leaving a very full theater of people swearing loudly in the dark.

Anyway, he's having a lot of fun getting all righteous about how fucked up the film is over at certain message boards, and far be it from me to get in the way of his enjoyment (because he does enjoy it), but we're going to see it again tomorrow and I have a little hunch it's going to grow on him. Cause if there's one strategic "mistake" he made, it was to re-read the book in between the two movies. See, I had just re-read them all the summer before Fellowship, so my reaction to that movie was initally rather more lukewarm than his, 'cause perhaps having a very fresh memory of the books leads to certain hopes and disappointments. Eventually it grew on me like multicolored third eyes on a Mary Sue.

Just today, he said that when we watched Fellowship on pay-per-view with his parents last fall, there were parts where he almost cried, and that there was nothing in TTT that made him do that. And I said, "Yeah, and how many times had you seen it by then?" (That was post-DVD, so well past counting.)

Initial impression was that I coulda done with about 20 minutes less of Helm's Deep and, say, at least 10 minutes more of the sad, wise grandeur of the Ents. I also coulda done with about 5 minutes less of Off-the-Cliff! Aragorn, and 5 minutes more developing Eowyn's character. And it still doesn't make sense to me that Faramir would let Frodo go so shortly after he sees that the little guy is losing it so hard he's already flagging down Nazgul.

We'll see how I feel by the time I've seen it for, like, the 7th time. Initially I have to agree with the poster who said, "Wow! What a great trailer for the Extended Edition!"

I'll always love the books exponentially more, but geez...it ain't the Bakshi version or anything.

I really don't get the Legolas fandom-frenzy. He's nice to look at, sure, but aside from the development of his friendship with Gimli, he's always seemed a bit flat to me. I have nothing against him. Just nothing in particular for him either.
