Not this shit again.

Well, it's got a different flavor this time, anyway. So there's Good Omens casting wank erupting on Tumblr. Terry and Neil, oh dear...now, when Sir Terry tossed up the idea of Benedict Cumberbatch playing Aziraphale AS HE DID, my mind immediately made me feel like a terrible person for thinking that maybe his illness had something to do with it, because LOLWUT? Turns out Neil agrees with him. Bad enough, right?

I'm not the only person who thinks that might be a casting suggestion that's even worse than the Robin Williams idea floated 15 years ago, which is saying a great deal.* But some fans really like it, and there's a fanmade dreamcasting poster floating around. Which Neil reblogged. Fan firmly on the HELL NO side flips out and calls Neil a dick. Other fans flip out all over that fan. This could fizzle or this could escalate...either way, I want no part of it, but keeping my big mouth shut isn't one of those talents I can always rely on.

* This isn't me being a hater. I love Benedict Cumberbatch. But I certainly don't love him for his Aziraphale-like qualities, because he has none whatsoever. Now Martin Freeman, on the other hand...

In other news, I continue to not give a shit about The Avengers. I might go see it eventually if I have to get out of the apartment for a while, but I'm not feeling a lot of excitement about it.

ETA: Aaaaaaannnd...now Fandom Secrets is in on the act. Never underestimate the power of a terrible idea whose time has come!

Neil Gaiman said flatly that he and Terry will be entirely hands-off when it comes to the show, other than expecting to be in the background of any dining scene (in that they would get fed heartily).

However... if they become influential in this casting choice, then it makes him a liar. And I will lose a fair amount of respect.

Oh, I think they're just speculating like everyone else, I don't think they're taking any sort of active role in making anything specific happen. They're just doing fancasting too - of course, when they do it, it gets more of a reaction. I still think calling them names over it is a way-out-of-line overreaction and I'm pretty disgusted with the person who did it.

Yeah, I know. But it's not good to know how incredibly opposite their personal views of who would be a proper Aziraphale is to what many of us already see in our heads. It's just... have they forgotten even the few descriptions of Aziraphale we get in the book? None of that fits Cumberbatch, at all.

I think I missed the name-calling. Yes, that would be going too far.
