We do get tornados, in theory - we're in the midwest after all. The only reason a killer tornado hasn't ripped right up the Kennedy Expressway is statistical. It could happen. It just hasn't yet. :D
I suppose it's the next logical step up from 'white thunder'. If we can have major thunder(snow)storms during January, why not associated tornadoes? Still, it seems very freaky!
It's a wonder we're not all down with dread fever or something from this sickly weather. IT IS JANUARY, we need COLD, kthnx. Winter tornadoes somehow sound scarier than normal summer ones.

I suppose. Though, Up here in the Cities we don't really get any. There are some in the outlining counties and all, but not usually here. *shrug*
